James Knox is a Christian, a husband, a father, a veteran and a mentor who has always been committed to serving others. He aims to continue this dedication as a member of the US Senate. Throughout his service for our country, he earned numerous Meritorious Service medals, decorations, citations and awards during his distinguished career. He served in Iraq as a Department of Defense Civilian where he earned the Defense Information Systems Agency Meritorious Service Medal. He is a Harvard Kennedy School Senior Executive Fellow, doctoral candidate in Information Assurance, holds a dual master’s degree in Management Information Systems and Management, and a dual bachelor’s degree in International Affairs and Social Science.

During his over 30 years of distinguished military and civil servant career, he was frequently sought after to address difficult challenges. He always subscribed to the principle core values that his father instilled in him – integrity, service, accountability. He knows that when you let people know how valuable they are and your commitment to serving them, they will trust you enough to have skin in the game and be accountable. Therefore, his strategy was always to use an inclusive and participatory leadership style to get buy-in and bring out the best solutions. James is married to the former Shelia Gibbons (USAF, retired) of Louisville, Georgia.

Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.…in a world full of frustrations and irritations, America's leadership must be guided by the lights of learning and reason or else those who confuse rhetoric with reality and the plausible with the possible will gain the popular ascendancy with their seemingly swift and simple solutions to every world problem.
— President John F. Kennedy
